DISCOVERY AMONGST KINDRED SPIRITS

Every Thursday from 12:00-3:00 in The Red House classroom.

This open group session is focused on being a sharing space. Regular attendees refer to it as a place where kindred spirits spend time creating together, while working on their own projects. This group operates based on the idea that creative experimentation in a supportive environment often stimulates an artist’s inspiration, and helps empower ideas as well as the successful acquisition and adaptation of new techniques. Water-media and mixed media collage have been recent avenues of exploration. All mediums are welcome.

INSIGHT & LAUGHTER

Third Tuesday of each month from 11:00-12:00 in The Red House classroom.

NEXT MEETING: SEPTEMBER 17th

Join us for an inspiring look at arts! In this group we read about art and discuss issues that pertain to what we have read. This is intended to help build our visual vocabularies, develop the context in which we see our art and the art world, and to help us better represent what we do as artists to the public.

As we enter the 2nd year of this group we are narrowing our focus and reading smaller more targeted writing. Essays and select chapters from books will be read as a response to topics that arise from our monthly meetings. The writings are posted here - just click the green box below to see this month’s selection!

ENCOURAGEMENT & FEEDBACK

Third Wednesday of each month from 2:00-3:00

NEXT SESSION: September 18th

Having your work critiqued, and participating in the critique of others work, is an invaluable way to grow your creative toolbox and develop verbal skills that allow you to comfortably present your work to the public. These positive results are amplified by critiques that focus on questions rather than judgments. We aim for critique sessions that are informative and thought provoking. Attendance, with or without work to share, is welcome – if no one brings work, we will have fun critiquing work from other sources.

Sessions are lead by RHANNA NYMAN or MARTIN POOLE

SVFAL Workshops-Martrin Poole

PORTRAIT & LANDSCAPE PAINTING COURSES with Martin A. Poole

LANDSCAPE PAINTING NEXT DATES:  TBA

Outdoors if the weather permits/ Red House Classroom otherwise

Join Martin for a workshop covering the basics of building believable space in a landscape painting. In this OIL PAINTING course you will discover why working out in nature is different than using photographic references. You will explore goals and define what purpose the elements of your landscape painting serve. And… you will uncover the power of your design as you learn to define your artistic intent.

In this course you will learn to:

  • Make three major, unequal areas in your design.

  • Join lights to lights, and darks to darks.

  • Build a visual journey using contrasting overlaps.

  • Develop a value system: Paint is far less powerful than light itself - how can we use the widest range possible and still respect our value keys?

  • Develop atmospheric space dependent on careful attention to relative values.

  • Establish a color system: We will probably start with a simple warm vs. cool color system, and build from there. This allows us to hang onto our value choices as we develop the image.

  • Keep your colors clean.

  • Define Colors vs. Values: Colors = identity of specifics, excitement Values = design, structure, atmospheric space

  • Manage edges: Because our eyes follow the strongest available edges, we can manage the viewer’s passage across the picture plane by managing the visibility of the painting’s various edges.

By the end of this 4 week course you will establish a final balance. There are a lot of variables - we want to make sure that you have made the painting you set out to make (or maybe a better one) and that nothing is out of whack. It is important to be happy with your work!

Course Fee:  $200, $225 for non-members
